A Vineyard. Some History. & A Whole Lot of Love.

One thing I absolutely love about Maryland is how rich the history is.  Every single building, park, lake, etc. has it's own unique story.  One of my favorite stories happens to be my in-laws backyard.  It was the original Boordy Vineyards in 1930.  (I am biased because I love wine & my family.)  Here's a little piece of history for you...

"It was a quiet act of civil disobedience that led to the founding of Boordy Vineyards in 1945. Fed up with Prohibition, and determined to help the decimated American wine industry get back on its feet, Philip and Jocelyn Wagner planted a small grapevine nursery on their property in Riderwood, Maryland in the early 1930s." - 1930-1965 THE EARLY YEARS; J. & P. WAGNER, PROPS.

Um... how cool is that.  The barn that they first made wine is still in my families backyard to this day.   It still houses the original wine presses and vats.  There is still remanence of where the grapevines once flourished.  The founders names are still imprinted on the outside wall with the founding date.  Even better, in the original poured concrete floor, you can find the initials of Philip & Jocelyn Wagner carved inside a heart.

The carving on the barn reads: Boordy Winery built by Jocelyn & Philip Wagner 7 Sept. 1943
